Term 2, Week 10 Wednesday 28th June 2023

A message from the Principal

We are finishing the term, learning right up until the very last minute, and with a bang of end of term exciting events.

On top of Better Start Literacy in Y0-Y2, as a whole school we are also continuing professional learning on The Writer’s Toolbox approach. Our Intermediate Schools are also using Writer’s Toolbox, so our students will continue to progress with this approach as they transition to writing in Year 7 and 8. Not only are we as teachers learning a new approach to teaching writing but so are our children. We are thrilled with the improvement in writing school wide. The sentence trains used in deliberate acts of teaching sentence types are magnetic and enable specific teaching around the
different sentence types. The online tool provides instant feedback on what our students are doing well in writing and where they can improve. We have attached a flyer with further information with the different sentence types we are learning and what writing at Pinehill School looks like.

School Disco - Thursday
There is much excitement amongst the students this week as we have our school Disco on Thursday evening. The theme is ‘Favourite Movie Character’ and we look forward to our tamariki turning up in their outfits and enjoying an evening of connecting with friends, dancing, enjoying food treats and having fun. Please note the disco is for current students attending Pinehill School only (no pre school or ex students). The Junior Disco (Y0-Y3) is first up at 5:00pm, with a 6:15pm pick up. The doors will open for the Senior Disco (Y4-Y6) at 6:30pm with an 8:00pm pick up. We ask students don’t bring more than $10 to spend on drinks and snacks and that they have something secure to keep their spending money in (jacket zip up pocket, disco zip up handbag that can be worn over the shoulder etc and kept zipped up while students are mixing, mingling and of course dancing). Thank you to our FOPs committee members for your organisation of this event. We can’t wait.

Matariki Learning Festival
You are all invited to join us in the school hall on Friday at 11:15am for our Matariki Learning Festival. Our phenomenal Kapa Haka group will open our learning festival, and to follow our Year 1-6 students will take to the stage to showcase their incredible learning journey through Matariki. We hope you can come along and join us for a spectacular morning of the integrated learning areas of science, social studies, dance, drama, visual art and well-being encapsulating Matariki learning. We will finish up the morning and celebrate the spirit of Matariki with a shared lunch. A truly fitting way to finish such a wonderful term at Pinehill School. All are welcome. We hope to see you there .

Mid Year Progress Report
On Friday your child will be bringing home a mid year progress school report. Please take time to go through this and if there is anything you are unsure of or would like further information about, please do not hesitate to email your child’s teacher to discuss further.

Enjoy Matariki and the school holiday break coming up. We look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 3 on Monday 17th July. We will welcome our new teachers, students and families to Pinehill School on the first day at Pinehill School with a whakatau, which will take place in the school hall at 9:00am. All are welcome to join us as we welcome everyone new to our place.

Colds and Flu

To ensure the wellbeing of everyone, we kindly request your support in keeping your child at home if they are unwell. This helps minimise the risk of their classmates and teachers falling ill as well. If your child shows any signs of being unwell while at school, we will contact you to arrange for their return home until they have fully recovered. Let’s work together to take care of one another.

Kapa Haka

Members of our Pinehill Kapa Haka group attended a local Matariki Festival at Murrays Bay Primary School on Thursday, June 15th. They performed alongside other schools, including Murrays Bay Primary and Intermediate as well as Westlake Boys. Our school sang five waiata, including two new waiata that we have learned this year. The students had worked hard to learn all of the movements, were able to perform with distinction, and received high praise from all in attendance. Well done Kapa Haka members.

The Resilience Project

Empathy is our ability to recognise and understand how other people are feeling and help them if they need help. We practise this by paying attention to peoples body language, the tone of their voice and their words. We also imagine how we would feel if we were in their situation.

Helpful Superheros in Room 19

In Room 19 they have been talking about how they can make a difference to others. They have talked about the different ways they are really good at helping others.
Here are some of our examples.
Production update

Auditions for speaking roles for our term 3 production are now complete and our production team is busy preparing for the start of rehearsals in term 3. If there are any parents or whanau members with a talent in dance who are available to support teachers with dance/movement practices on Thursday afternoons next term, we would love to hear from you. Our practices run between 1:30 and 2:50pm each Thursday. Extra help with helping students learn steps and moves would be greatly appreciated. Please contact marg@pinehill.school.nz if you are keen to help.
