Term 4, Week 6 Wednesday 15th November 2023

A message from the Principal

Kia ora tatou, Mālō e lele, Ann yeong haseyo, Ni hao, Dzień dobry

Last week we participated, alongside many other schools in NZ, with Play Week Aotearoa 2023. This is a week focusing on the celebration of play and its value to tamariki, whānau and communities across Aotearoa. Play is the easiest way for tamariki and whānau to stay active. It’s how our tamariki learn to problem solve, get creative, make mistakes and create new friendships. They get to build the attitudes, skills and life-long love of being active. Our Play Week at Pinehill included classroom games, creativity tasks and a highlight for many were the lunchtime Play activities. Most popular with the students were the mini wheels day and bike day. Comments from the students said it all. My favourite comment from a Year 2 student as he was scootering around the course on the Hilary court ‘This is the best day ever!’ Another favourite moment for me was on bike day. To see the joy on our students faces and the resilience and learning during this time was phenomenal. We even had a couple of students learn to ride their bikes on the field without training wheels. Please visit Pinehill School facebook page to see further photos and video footage. Aside from a scheduled Play Week, there was a strong consensus to make these lunch time play events more regular and we look at timetabling this in once a term.
Christmas Concert
We are looking forward to our up and coming ‘Pinehill Christmas Concert and Picnic’ taking place under the Taumaru and school field area in a week's time, on Wednesday 22nd November at 5:00pm. Our children are learning a Christmas themed song this term which will be performed on the night with all the classes in each team. We are all very excited about this event and the opportunity to come together as a Pinehill School family towards the end of what has been a fabulous year.
Families are encouraged to arrive from 4:00pm. Children must be accompanied by their parent/s or a guardian. This is an opportunity for the whole family to come along with a picnic rug or picnic chairs and dinner, for an evening of joy. For families that would prefer to buy dinner to bring along, you may want to stop in at one of the many local food outlets on the way to the Christmas concert or purchase something to eat through the FoPs (Friends of Pinehill School) options -

Class Lists
We are currently compiling our class lists for 2024. Thank you for the contributions we have received which we are taking into consideration alongside teacher input and student voice. We endeavour to combine your input with our knowledge of your children to make the best decisions we can. If for some reason you are NOT returning to our school in 2024 and haven’t told us, could you please let the office know, This helps us with the class organisation.

Staff Farewells
In this newsletter we farewell staff who are leaving us at the end of this term and introduce new teachers joining our Pinehill School community in 2024.

Farewell to…
Mariëtte Fourie (in Room 12), who has been in a fixed-term teaching position for the year in a Year 1 class. We wish Mariëtte and her family all the very best with their relocation and move to Hamiliton and wish Mariëtte all the best for her future endeavours.

Maggie Aldous has been teaching at Pinehill School for the last couple of years. Maggie will be moving back to Christchurch next year. Maggie also has a little baby Aldous on the way, due in April next year. We wish Maggie and her family all the very best with their relocation move and exciting journey ahead.

Many thanks to Kurt Jones who has been a part time member of the learning support team for several years and has supported students engagement and learning. He will continue to support our Kapa Haka, and will still be part of the PKC out of school programme team. Kia Kaha from us all.

Liam Judd has been in a learning support role supporting teachers and students mainly in Y4-Y6 classes but is very well known throughout the school by all. We knew we only had Matua Liam for two terms (fitting in with his professional basketball career) and we are blessed to have had Liam in this time. You have made a huge impact Liam in your short time here and will be missed. We wish you all the very best with the Jets and your basketball journey ahead.

We will farewell our leaving staff during our last school assembly, Tuesday 12th December at 2:15pm. All parents are welcome to attend. We would love to see you there.

Sarah Ward will be retiring from her Deputy Principal role and long term service, 26 years at PInehill School at the end of this year. We will hold a retirement/farewell assembly for Sarah on Wednesday 13th December at 11:00am. Although Sarah will be back to Pinehill in a part time/relieving role, we wish Sarah all the very best with her exciting retirement endeavours ahead.

A warm Pinehill School Community welcome to staff joining us in 2024…

Sarah Cattell/ Deputy Principal: Sarah is currently an Assistant Principal at Northcross Intermediate School. So, Sarah may be known to some of our families already who have older students at the intermediate school. Sarah has strengths in IT, maths and assessment. We are looking forward to Sarah joining our team in 2024.

Alex Duffin: Alex has been teaching in West Auckland and is delighted to have a closer commute as he begins at Pinehill next year. Alex has strengths in literacy, maths and PE/sports. We look forward to Alex joining our Pinehill Team in 2024.

Amy Koh: Amy is well known to many, following her time teaching in Year 4 for a term this year. Amy will be returning to Pinehill School in 2024 for our lovely Ricarda Petzer, while Ricarda is on maternity leave.

Our new staff members are making arrangements to be here in the last week of the term to meet their new students for their 2024 class. This will take place on Wednesday 13th December at 1:30 pm. We look forward to officially welcoming our new staff and all our new students/whanau during a Pinehill Powhiri in the new year.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one, but the work of many.

Ngā mihi nui,
