A message from the Principal

Kia ora tātou,
Welcome to the new school year!
We have had an amazing start to the school year. It was wonderful to have our Pōwhiri last Friday to welcome our new staff, 47 new students and whanau. It is important to us that your move to our school is as easy as possible. If there is anything you need to know, please do ask. No question is ever too small.

This year we introduced ‘Whanau Connect’ meetings at Pinehill. This meant before the children’s first full day at school, your family and child/ren could book a meeting with your child's new 2024 teacher. These meetings provided an opportunity right from day one to meet each other, build a relationship, talk about communication and share information that will help your child/the learner and the support people around the learner, have an enjoyable and successful year. We had an 89% attendance rate at these meetings and it was great to hear feedback from parents, students and teachers on how valuable these meetings were. If you were unable to attend a meeting with your child but would still like this opportunity, please do contact your child’s teacher to arrange another time.
It’s important to us that we work together as a team to ensure your child has the best possible start to school and makes the best progress possible.

Over the Summer school holiday break we have had a few property projects on the go. Our school has had a full exterior paint, which has given us a very new and fresh appearance. We have also had shade sails installed over our top and middle playgrounds as well as the very popular handball court area in Hilary block. This was a big project to undertake, but very worthwhile as we now have much needed shade for our tamariki when they are playing outside in these hotspot areas. A big thank you also to our Property Manager, Shaun Weston, who has maintained the grounds over the holiday break, making them a wonderful environment to be in and enjoy.

I would like to acknowledge the support from all our families for ensuring the children are set up for a successful school year. We are very mindful that the start of the school year can be very expensive, so thank you. Please keep in mind we welcome expenses to be paid off over time to spread the expense over the year if this is an option you would prefer.

Well done to those children who have already worn their hat outside to start the school year. All New Zealand schools are required to ensure that hats are worn in summer months. Children may wear a hat of their choice or purchase a school hat from our uniform providers Janbells Ltd, phone (09)47834550
Please name your child’s hat and other clothing.

8.50am Start time for school day
Pinehill School uses an electronic roll that has approval from the Ministry of Education. The roll will be taken twice daily at 8.50am and 1.30pm. It is important for you to ensure that your child is at school promptly by 8.50am. Many important notices are also shared at this time. Our school gates open at 8.15am. Students are able to arrive anytime between 8:15am - 8:45am. Arriving by 8.40am will allow your child to get ready for learning, greet their teacher and mix with their peers, ensuring a positive and stress free start to the day. If your child needs to be dropped at school before the gates open at 8:15 am, please contact PKC to book in supervision.

Fortnightly Newsletter
Our newsletter will be published every fortnight on Wednesday’s as a link on our School App . Please read the newsletters carefully as they contain vital information that will help your child to stay safe, and be successful and involved in the life of the school. If you would like support downloading the School App on your phone please contact the school office, info@pinehill.school.nz
This first newsletter of the year has also been emailed out, for those families who are not yet set up on School App. Further newsletters will be accessible via School App only.

School Assembly
Our whole school assemblies will continue to be held every Tuesday afternoon in the hall at 2:15pm. Each week one of our classes has the opportunity to host the assembly and to be up on stage, sharing their learning with the rest of the school. Next Tuesday, we will start the year with a ‘how assembly works’ with the children as well as singing with Mr Rogers. Following that, Room 7 are first up on stage to share the start of their year with the school. You can find out which week your child’s class is presenting and sharing learning, on the school website/calendar section. Our assemblies are an afternoon full of learning celebration and awards, as shields for each class are also awarded. Parents, whanau, family members are always welcome to attend.

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Waitangi Day yesterday and spent some time reflecting on why this day is so important for us as New Zealanders. I also wish you all a very happy Chinese New Year, as we commence the Year of the Dragon.

Success is not the work of one, but the work of many.

Flippa Ball 2024 Expression of Interest

Flippa Ball is most commonly known as ‘Mini Water Polo’. The game is a water based sport and is a great way for kids to be active while building confidence when in the water. The sport is played in a shallow pool (1.2m – 1.3m deep) and uses a range of ball skills, swimming and team work. Flippa Ball is a great stepping stone into Water Polo with kids learning the basic skills needed to take on the deep water in Intermediate and Club level.

If you are in year 4-6 and you would like to join a Pinehill Flippa Ball Team this year please email your child's name and year, and your contact details, to sport@pinehill.school.nz by Thursday 8th February.
