Term 3, Week 8 Wednesday 6th September 2023

A message from the Principal

Speeches are used on various occasions throughout our lives to communicate information, persuade, inspire, entertain, or commemorate events. Our senior students have been learning about the components of persuasive speech writing during literacy teaching and learning in their classrooms. Over the last few weeks they have not only worked on the content of their own speech, but also the delivery. Most of our classes (Y2-Y6) attended the speech finals to listen to our 7 finalists deliver their speech. Topics this year included Global Warming, Food Bins, Saving the Earth, 3 Day Weekend, Growth Mindset, Vegans and Books. The audience were engaged throughout and our judge, Anna Taylor, English teacher, from Rangitoto College was impressed with all of the speeches making it a difficult decision.
Year 5/6 Speech Winner: Congratulations to Allen Bai

We also held Korean and Mandarin speech competitions and thank the following judges for their time and feedback to our contestants.
Thank you to our Korean speech competition judges, Jenny Yu and Jodie Kim.
Korean speech winner: Congratulations to Sean Lee

Thank you to our Mandarin speech competition judges, Jo Hsu and Calla Cheng.
Mandarin speech winner: Congratulations to Mia Zhang

Modular Admin block update
Our modular administration block arrived on time and was craned in late last Monday evening. The workers are continuing to complete finishing touches, including the outside ramp, wiring and plumbing. We expect to move in early next term. In the meantime, our front office block is operating as per usual.

School Production - Gillian: Dog in the Big City
Only 6 more sleeps until our school production, Gillian Dog in the Big City. Get ready to be ‘wowed’. Just as a reminder, performance dates are: Tuesday 12 September, Wednesday 13 September, Thursday 14 September.
Our Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students need to be at school at 5:30pm on each of these nights and each show starts at 6:30pm.

Three way Conferences - 3WC
Our Three Way Conferences are taking place on Wednesday 20th September from 3:15pm-6:30pm, and Thursday 21st September from 1:30pm - 7:00pm.
Three Way Conferences gives you the opportunity to come into school with your child and meet with the teacher in a Three-Way Conference meeting. The school will close at the normal time of 3.00 pm on Wednesday 20th September with an early finish of 12.30 pm on Thursday 21st September.

PKC will open earlier on Thursday for families who are unable to collect their children at 12:30pm. If you are requiring your child to attend after school care on Thursday, please contact PKC to book a place. The school library will also be open for supervision, for students who are not attending PKC but can not be picked up until 3pm. 3WC - School Closing at 12.30pm

What do 3WC meetings look like?
Each family books in a 15-minute slot to attend. Your child will talk to you about what they were learning and how well they achieved the learning, their strengths and weaknesses, their learning goals and how you can help them at home achieve these goals. An important thing to remember during the 3WC meeting is that the focus is on learning and not behaviour. If you have concerns around your child’s behaviour then please email or pop in and see the teacher when the matter arises.

Your Role as a Parent
To be an active participant in the discussion, the questions below may help. If English is your second language you are welcome to be supported by an interpreter.

Questions you could ask your child to help discuss their learning:
  • What have you been learning?
  • Tell me what you think you are doing well?
  • What helped with this learning?
  • What did you find difficult?
For these conferences we use an online booking system. To make an appointment go to and follow the online instructions. Confirmation of your times will be emailed to you. You may change your appointments at any time. For any of our families without online access at home or work you may make a booking through the school office.

The staff and children are putting in much time and effort into preparing for the Three-Way Conference meetings. We look forward to seeing you all there.
