Term 2, Week 6 Wednesday 5th June 2024

Message from our Principal

Kia ora tatou, Mālō e lele, Ann yeong haseyo, Ni hao, Dzień dobry
I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful long weekend with their families. It was delightful to see the children arrive at school this morning, full of stories about their weekend adventures and feeling refreshed for the week ahead.

Teacher Only Day
Our staff participated in professional learning onsite yesterday with our facilitator Brenda MacPherson on Cultural Competencies and Te Mataiaho (NZ Curriculum Refresh). This was the first Teacher Only Day mandated by the Ministry of Education. Our second Teacher Only Day will be in Term 4 on Friday 15 November.

Māori Whānau Hui – 26 June, 3.30pm
We invite you to our Pinehill whānau hui. This informal event is a great opportunity to meet and connect with other Māori families at our kura. We hope the event will foster a relational space to enhance outcomes for our Māori students. Tamariki are warmly welcome to participate.
Who: Whānau and kaiako of Pinehill School
What: Meet, connect, and share your thoughts on a redesign and new kapa haka uniforms for our school.
For catering purposes, please RSVP by 24 June using this form. We look forward to seeing you there.

Attendance
As we get further into the school term and year, we would like to remind you of the importance of good attendance for all students. Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning. Too many absences not only can affect learning progress and achievement for the absent student but also can affect your child’s friendships and social skills as well as increase their anxiety levels.

Attendance Matters
As you may be aware, The Ministry of Education has set attendance targets for all schools in NZ and has attendance requirements and information to heighten awareness of the importance of attending school each day and to improve school attendance in all of our schools. If your child is healthy, they should be in school.
Student Attendance - Education in NZ
What Can Families Do?
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Good attendance will help children do well in school, college and in their careers.
What you can do:
Make sure you know the term dates and details of any days your child is not required to attend e.g. teacher-only days (check the school app and newsletters for communication on this).
  • Avoid taking students out of school time e.g. for holidays or shopping days. Wherever possible arrange family holidays during the school holidays.
  • Make sure your children arrive on time to school.
Attendance Notifications
Pinehill School sends automated Attendance text Notifications to parents whose children are marked “Unknown absence” on a given school day. Parents receive a text message and/or email to notify them of the unknown absence. If there is no response, a phone call will follow.

We also realise that there are a number of valid reasons why your child may be late to school. Please send a note or call the school in advance if you know your child will be out of school ahead of time.

Layby Area on Spencer Rd
Over the last few weeks, we have received support from a local traffic warden and our community constable, Tania Wansink, to support our community with safe driving practice, particularly on Spencer Rd.
However, I am saddened by the continued unsafe driving and parking behaviours in our layby area. Weekly, I receive emails about this issue. It is our collective responsibility to ensure our school is safe for our children, including during pick-up and drop-off times. The traffic warden and community constable will continue to support us and have provided the following reminders:
  • NO PARKING in the layby. It is a drop-off and pick-up area only.
  • In the morning, you may use the layby for a maximum of 2 minutes. If you need more time, please park in a side street and walk to the school.
  • Drive into the layby in the correct direction to avoid oncoming traffic and allow more cars to fit and keep traffic flowing.
We all need to follow these procedures to ensure our children’s safety. If you see unsafe driving or parking, please send a photo and the number plate to the Community Roadwatch NZ Police team who will support with further education.
We look forward to seeing responsible and safe driving and parking in our layby area from this afternoon onwards.
Medicine Authority Form
With cooler weather setting in, some students are bringing medication to school. Please note that the school will only administer prescription medication to students whose parents have completed a medicine authority form. Please see our medicines policy alongside all our school policies.

Whole School FUN RUN THANK YOU
There was so much fun at our first Pinehill Fun Run. It was wonderful to see so many parents and whānau supporting our children. I loved seeing the colourful t-shirts afterward, which the children were proud to show off. If you missed it or would like a recap, please click on the link to see the video.

Staff Update
Mrs Mills, teacher in R11, will be taking maternity leave later next term. We have secured an outstanding teacher, Mr. Mark van Dam, to teach in Room 11 while Mrs. Jess Mills is on leave. Mark has spent time in various classrooms at our school and has recently visited Room 11 to meet with Jess Mills. He will continue to liaise with Jess and the Year 4 team to support a smooth transition towards the end of August, next term. We are excited for Jess’s journey into parenthood and wish her and her husband all the very best with this amazing journey ahead.
