Term 2, Week 8 Wednesday 19th June 2024

Message from our Principal

Kia ora tatou,

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori. Happy Matariki everyone!
Matariki is coming up. This year in New Zealand nationwide, Matariki will be acknowledged and celebrated as a public holiday on Friday 28th June. Matariki is the Maori New Year. It is an important time to celebrate the earth and show respect for the land. It is about coming together, sharing stories, acknowledging the past and those who have passed away, planning for the future, and feasting on the crops they have harvested.

Matariki Learning Festival at Pinehill - Thursday 27th June at 11:15am
You are all invited to join us in the school hall next Thursday, 27th June at 11:15am for our Matariki Learning Festival. Our phenomenal Kapa Haka group will open our learning festival, and to follow our Year 1-6 students will take to the stage to showcase their incredible learning journey through Matariki. We hope you can come along and join us for a spectacular morning of the integrated learning areas of science, social studies, dance, drama, visual art and well-being encapsulating Matariki learning. We will finish up the morning and celebrate the spirit of Matariki with a shared lunch. All are welcome. We hope to see you there. A truly fitting way to finish Week 9 at Pinehill School as we head off to a long weekend with Friday 28th June being a Matariki Public holiday.

Kapa Haka Matariki Festival at Murrays Bay School
We are very proud of our Kapa Haka group (100 students) who attended and performed at the Matariki Festival last Thursday at Murrays Bay School, alongside our Cluster - Mid Bays School Kapa Haka groups. They did a fantastic job and represented our school with pride and mana. It was pretty special to have some of our ex Pinehill students from last year (now at Intermediate School) come and join in with our Kapa Haka group for the last two songs of the set also. Many thanks to our Kapa Haka teachers, Karen Blau, Alastair Rogers and Kurt Jones as well as the parents who assisted.

Cluster Cross Country
Congratulations to all the runners who represented Pinehill School at the Super Cluster Cross Country last Thursday. Mr van Beusekom and Mr Duffin attended this event with our runners and came back full of praise. Praise for the effort our runners put in and praise for the wonderful ambassadors our runners were for Pinehill School. Special mention to Daisy Yang who placed 2nd overall in the Year 6 girls event, and to Claire Li who placed 3rd overall in the Year 5 girls event. We are very proud of all our runners and their efforts at the Cluster Cross Country as well as their display of the Pinehill Way outside the school grounds in this cluster school event year.

School Disco - Wednesday 3rd July
The school disco is coming up! There is much excitement amongst the students as we draw nearer to our school Disco on Thursday evening. The theme is ‘Pyjama Party Disco’ and we look forward to our tamariki turning up in their PJs and enjoying an evening of connecting with friends, dancing, enjoying food treats and having fun. Please note the disco is for current students attending Pinehill School only (no pre school or ex students). The Junior Disco (Y0-Y3) is first up at 5:00pm, with a 6:15pm finish and pick up. The doors will open for the Senior Disco (Y4-Y6) at 6:30pm with an 8:00pm finish and pick up. We ask students don’t bring more than $10 to spend on drinks and snacks and that they have something secure to keep their spending money in (jacket zip up pocket, disco zip up handbag that can be worn over the shoulder etc and kept zipped up while students are mixing, mingling and of course dancing). Thank you to our FOPs committee members for your organisation of this event. We can’t wait.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one, but the work of many.

Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal

Mathex Interschool Competition

This morning, 16 students from across the Year 5/6 Team participated in this annual event hosted by Northcross Intermediate. Much brain power was involved and much fun was had. We were very impressed with all the teams’ effort and positive attitude.

Although we did not get a placing this year, the experience was challenging and a real “Dis!” moment, and Maths was definitely the winner on the day. Thank you to the parents who supported us on the day.

Pinehill School Art Exhibition

Can you help? Truck required

In September, Pinehill is holding its biennial Art Exhibition. For this event, we hire screens which we pay quite a bit of money to transport to and from Pinehill. We wonder if there is a parent who has a small truck who would generously donate their time and truck to help with transportation, even one way.
There are 30 screens in total - 15 sized 1800 x 2000 cm; 15 sized 1200 x 2000 cm.
If you are able to help, please contact mark@pinehill.school.nz or 021722529
