Term 1, Week 4 Wednesday 21st February 2024

A message from the Principal

Kia ora tatou,
There has been a pleasant hum across the school with students engaged in learning, while reconnecting with each other and forming many new friendships. Teachers are spending time developing positive connections and relationships within teaching spaces to ensure that all of our students feel supported and excited to commence their learning journey.

Next week we are celebrating Culture Week at Pinehill School.
Our students and families are from a multitude of over 38 different ethnicities. Culture Week provides us with an opportunity to discover where we are all from, a little about others’ culture, to learn about each other and to celebrate the rich diversity at Pinehill School.

‘Once you understand and appreciate other people’s cultural backgrounds, then you can also connect with them more.’

A big THANK YOU to the many parents and whanau members who are taking time during Culture Week to come into our PInehill School classrooms and share aspects of your culture. If you are able to visit your child’s classroom to share part of your culture, please email your child’s teacher to book in a sharing time. In previous years our tamariki have been treated to your cooking, sharing of artefacts, storytelling, language teaching, games, music, art work and more. This home school partnership enriches the Culture Week learning experiences immensely, providing much authentic learning for all.

We will have our Culture Parade and shared lunch on Thursday 29th February. The Parade will begin at 11:00am. Your child is invited to come to school dressed in clothing that reflects their culture/s.

A shared lunch will follow. Students are invited to bring a small plate of food (representing food from their culture) to school. This can go directly to the classroom as children arrive on Friday. Teachers will have an area set aside for this. We are unable to provide heating for food with the day's timetable and events going on, so you may prefer to drop off a dish closer to lunch time already cooked and heated and ready for students to sample. Please list ingredients for our students who have allergies. We will be encouraging students to try something different. We hope as many of you as possible are able to join us for both the parade and shared lunch celebration.

Pinehill School Family Picnic
It is coming up….our much anticipated Pinehill School Family Picnic. Please keep Wednesday 6th March from 5pm-7pm free.
Pack your family dinner, blankets or chairs and meet your class on the school field for an evening of fun and further connecting with teachers and other families. This is a whole family event, children must be accompanied by their parent/s.

Your child's room number will be on a sign on the field, and this is the area you can picnic in. This gives families the chance to meet and mix with each other, as well as have an informal opportunity to further meet your child's teacher. A big thank you to FOPS who are working hard behind the scenes to have some fun games, prizes, food stands and more. We look forward to seeing you there.

Success is not the work of one, but the work of many.

Phones and Devices

All state schools | kura are required to implement a phone rule that has student phones ‘away for the day’ as soon as possible in Term 1 2024 and no later than the start of Term 2 2024.
The Government has introduced regulations to put this requirement in place. These can be found at:

Education (School Boards) Amendment Regulations 2023 – Parliamentary Counsel Office

Pinehill School has existing phone rules in place and these reflect the new regulations.
Pinehill School mobile Phone and smart watch phone regulations for students
We recommend students do not bring a mobile phone to school. If students have a smart watch phone, this is to be switched off during the learning school day.
If you are needing to get an urgent message regarding pick up changes etc to your child, please call the school office by 2pm and we will deliver the message to your child for you.
Any mobile phones that do come to school will need to be in the student’s school bag for the day. The school is not responsible for any loss or damage to student phones or smart watches. We believe that providing an environment where students can focus on learning and interpersonal interactions, rather than social media and text messaging etc, is far more beneficial.

When we witness students using their phones or smart watch phones during the day, the phone will be held securely at reception for collection at the end of the school day. The phone can be collected before reception closes at 3.30pm or collected the next day. Please note that Smart watches need to have their smart features disabled during school time.

Cultural Week and Parade

Dear Parents,

Pinehill School is celebrating our culture with a week where we would like to invite parents into the classroom to share their culture in Term 1, Week 5, Monday 26th February - Friday 1st March. Some suggestions are, read a story in your home language to the class or small group, share pictures/photos, teach our children a game, share a dance from your culture, musical instrument etc. Talk to your child’s teacher about your idea and how much time is available.
As part of our Cultural Week we are holding a Celebration Parade on Thursday 29th February at 11am. You are very welcome to come and join in the parade, we would love to see as many parents and caregivers there as possible. Some of our cultural groups will be performing.

Our children will have the option to dress in their national costume and parade through the school with their class.

We understand that children and families may identify with more than one country. For them to be able to express their ethnicity, we are asking parents to talk with their child about their family ethnicity. Children can parade carrying 2 flags that symbolise the country they identify with and the one where they were born.

We hope that in this way everyone’s ethnicity can be shared and celebrated. Does anyone have a connection to a cultural group who would be able to perform for our school? For example, Lion dancers, Korean Fan Dancers or cultural group etc. We are looking for a short presentation to support our own students’ culture. Please contact me at natalie@pinehill.school.nz

Shared lunch
After our Parade on Thursday 29th February 2024 we are having a shared lunch. This is an optional activity. You are invited to send your child with food for themselves and one other to share from your culture. We are hoping parents will be mindful that there are children in the school with peanut allergies and would appreciate peanuts, cherries and walnuts not being in food sent to school. All food must have an ingredient list so children can pick what they are able to eat. We will be encouraging them to try something different.

We are very much looking forward to this event and hope you can participate in it as well.

Room 3 Writing

Room 3, Year 3, have been reading 'The Day the Crayon's Quit' for their Quality Storybook. Here is a piece of writing from Mia Wang.

Dear Duncan,
I am the purple crayon and we need to talk. I've been overworking. I am very tired of drawing dragons and wizards and I need a break. It's me, the blue crayon. I am getting shorter. I don't want to get shorter. Don't use me! It's me, the green crayon. I am more creative because I can draw lots of trees. Give me an award! It's me, the grey crayon. I always draw big animals for you. I'm very tired. I can't draw anymore. I quit! I am the white crayon. I don't even show. I feel like I'm useless! I can only show on black paper. Use black paper! I'm the black crayon. Why can't the girl and the boy wear black swimsuits, or the ball and the rainbow be black? Please make it happen. I'm the orange crayon. I don't talk to the yellow crayon, but we used to be best buddies. I used to think that we would be buddies forever, but it wasn't going to happen. It's me, the pink crayon. Why do I have to draw a love letter? Is it for your crush? If it's that, I'm getting shorter everyday. Don't use me any more. I am the red crayon. I only draw strawberries and Santas. I am so sick of it! Use another colour. Not me!
