Term 1, Week 6 Wednesday 6th March 2024

A message from the Principal

Kia ora tatou, Mālō e lele, Ann yeong haseyo, Ni hao, Dzień dobry

I am very proud of all of our Year 6 students who went through the process of applying for house leader positions. We had 40 students apply, which is an overwhelming number of responses for 12 positions and shows how sought after this position is.

The process involved filling out an application form and an informal meeting with myself and Miss Cattell, followed by shortlisting. All those shortlisted had a few days to prepare a presentation on the topic: ‘If you are a house leader, what project will you continue or start- up in the school so that Pinehill School continues to be a great school?

We were very impressed with all presentation ideas and the exciting initiatives our house leaders have planned for the 2024 year. We are lucky to have students so dedicated to the school. Many thanks to parents for taking the time to support your children during this process.

A special congratulations to the students listed in the table below, who are our house leaders for the 2024 year. They were awarded their house badges during our assembly yesterday. Mr Riley and Mrs Johnston will continue to work closely with the leaders and mentor them as their initiatives are planned out and put into place, as well as broadening their leadership opportunities within the school.
We are all looking forward to our Pinehill School Family Picnic this evening, from 5pm-7pm.
Pack your family dinner, blankets or chairs and meet your class on the school field for an evening of fun. This is a whole family event, children must be accompanied by their parent/s.

Your child's room number will be on a sign on the field, and this is the area you can picnic in. This gives families the chance to meet and mix with each other, as well as have an informal opportunity to further meet your child's teacher. Our house leaders will have organised games on the field that our students are welcome to join in. A big thank you to FOPS who have worked hard to have some food stands and a Ring Toss game running during the evening. We look forward to seeing you there.

Last week we celebrated Culture Week at Pinehill School.
Our students and families are from a multitude of over 40 different ethnicities. Culture Week provides us with an opportunity to discover where we are all from, a little about others’ culture, to learn about each other and to celebrate the rich diversity at Pinehill School.

‘Once you understand and appreciate other people’s cultural backgrounds, then you can also connect with them more.’

A big THANK YOU to the many parents and whanau members who took time last week to come into our PInehill School classrooms and share aspects of your culture. Our children were treated to your cooking, sharing of artefacts, storytelling, language teaching, games, music, art work and more. This home school partnership enriches the Culture Week learning experiences immensely, providing much authentic learning for all.

We continue to offer you the opportunity to come in and share something from your culture before the end of the term, please email your child’s teacher if you would like to do this, to book in a sharing time.

Farewell Mr Weston
We have some bitter, sweet news to share with you. After 16 years as our star school caretaker/property manager, Mr Shaun Weston is moving on to another employment opportunity. Shaun, we thank you for being a part of our Pinehill School community and undertaking all of your many and varied caretaker/property manager responsibilities to the next level. Not only have our grounds and property been consistently and meticulously maintained but your support with art exhibition displaying, production sets and bleacher set up, EOTC water slide extraordinaire and more have not gone unnoticed. On top of this, Shaun is all things Pinehill, a top bloke, and we are really going to miss him. Shaun’s last day with us is Friday 15th March. We will have a farewell for Shaun on his last day including a farewell assembly at 10:00am which you are all invited to and a ‘Dress like Mr Weston’ day next Friday. Staff and students can turn up to school in non uniform clothes like what Mr Weston wears, including accessories (ear muffs etc). Shaun, we wish you all the very best with your new property maintenance technician role. They are so lucky to have you.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one, but the work of many.

Ngā mihi nui,
