Term 1, Week 6 Wednesday 15th March 2023

A message from the Principal

Kia ora tātou,

Our Year 3 students had a successful sleepover at Pinehill School last Thursday. This experience enabled the students to get a snapshot of camp life including a taste of sports rotations, team challenges, working together and a night away from home as part of a progression pathway to Year 5/6 camp. Year 3 had so much fun and it was wonderful to share this experience with them.
A huge thank you to all our wonderful parent helpers and family members who stayed overnight, helped in the kitchen and supervised or helped with the Education Outside The Classroom activities. We really appreciate you! A massive shout out and thank you to our teachers in this team: Caitlin Blackwell, Jodie Kim and Danika Chambers for their planning, organisation and dedication in making this event happen and ensuring it was such a wonderful experience for our students.

The Year 4 camp is next term and the Year 5/6 camp is next week.

Lockdown Update
I am very proud of our children and staff and how diligent they were with following lockdown procedures on Monday afternoon. The Pinehill Way was in action throughout the whole process. We saw all cogs in action - responsibility, respect, integrity, resilience and excellence. As in previous correspondence the school received an aggressive and threatening phone call. Following our procedures, we immediately went into lockdown. Once police arrived, further investigated and secured the grounds, we were able to lift the lockdown. Police have been able to locate the caller who has been referred to Youth Aid and they are confident there is no further concern or follow up required. We have spent time talking to the children and reassuring them that they are safe and ok. Your children may like to talk about what has happened further with you at home. Please continue to reassure them and if there is anything further we can do to support, please let us know.

We trust you received our lockdown updates every 15 minutes on the School App. This is a timely reminder to check you have the School App downloaded to your phone, your phone numbers and email details updated. If you need help with any of this, please contact the school office.

NZEI strike - School remains open on Thursday 16 March
Tomorrow, NZEI union members will be on strike. As we have availability of teaching staff and relievers, we are able to remain open for instruction as usual and school remains open for all students. Please be aware that your child may not have their usual teacher on this day.

Three Way Conferences - please calendar mark the dates
In two weeks time, during week 8, you will have the opportunity to attend a Three Way Conference to find out more about your child’s learning in the classroom. School will close at the normal time of 3.00pm on Wednesday 29th March with an early finish of 12.30pm on Thursday 30th March.

Three-Way Conference dates and times
  • Wednesday 29th March 3.15pm - 6.00pm
  • Thursday 30th March 1.30pm - 7.00pm
These meetings are a conversation between the student, parents and teacher that is focused on recent learning. It is one of the many ways of reporting to you, on your child’s progress at school. In a 3WC meeting, it is the child that leads the way by talking about their recent learning and progress. Not only is your child the best person to tell you about what they have learnt, but by talking about their learning they can build and deepen their learning. We will provide you information on how to book a 3WC slot in next weeks newsletter. In the meantime, please pencil the 3WC date/time into your calendar. The staff and children are putting in much time and effort into preparing for the Three Way Conference meetings. We look forward to seeing you all there.

The Resilience Project

Growing our positiveness

At Pinehill School we are committed to supporting the well-being of our rangatahi.
As part of this, lots of classes complete a daily journal near the end of our school day,
reflecting on 3 things that have gone well for us on that day, or 3 things that we are
grateful for. This helps us find the positives in our day. We are getting into the habit
of ‘collecting’ these positive thoughts during our school day so we have ideas ready
to record.
There is a lot of research to support the idea that we can train our brains to think
more positively (our natural tendency can be to dwell on the negative). This
retraining can take up to 6 months, but once our positive pathways are established in
our brains, they become our ‘go-to’ thoughts.
We would love for our Pinehill parents to experience the power of this positive
practice. You could:
● ask your child when you pick them up after school, “What went well for you
today?” as a starting point for talking about their learning day
● try this at home as you eat dinner as a family - how powerful it would be for
your children to hear what has gone well for you during your day too
● try this at home as you tuck your child into bed - how powerful to drift off to
sleep with positiveness in their heads!
We hope you are inspired to join us on our well-being journey. We would love to hear
from you if you would like to share how your whanau is incorporating this into your
daily routine, and any changes you notice.
