Inspiring active learners and leaders who make a difference

INTRODUCING

Darren Mathers

My name is Darren Mathers and I will be teaching Year 4 in Room 10. I enjoy sports and love spending time outdoors with my friends and family. I have two adult daughters who have both finished their education and are now back living in Auckland, having studied in Dunedin. I am lucky to have taught in different countries and love travelling and seeing the world.

I cannot wait to meet everyone and get to know you all. I have been teaching for over 25 years and especially enjoy teaching in the middle area of primary school. I love teaching all curriculum subjects but especially enjoy teaching P.E, maths, art and literacy. As well as being a Year 4 teacher, I am the teacher in charge of I.T, Math’s and the Year 3 / 4 team leader. Also, I am a member of the board of trustees.

The best part of teaching for me is when I see the light in the eyes of a student light up because they understand new or difficult learning. Enabling students to be successful in their learning is the most important aspect of teaching. I feel fortunate and privileged to influence the lives of young people and teach them skills and strategies that they can take with them into the wider world.

I have an open-door policy and I am available to have regular conversations with you about your child’s learning and achievements. Please email me or see me before or after school to arrange an appointment.

What happens in Room 10

● When your child gets to school in the morning, they need to hang up their bag. Then they need to come and say, “Good Morning.” After that, they need to organise all their tools for learning ready to start the school day at 8:50 am
● Every morning, relaxing, calming music will be playing to help get our minds ready for the learning ahead.
● In Room 10, we are a team and are expected to support each other in our learning. We use ‘Assessment for Learning’ which enables us to be active learners. We are in the driver’s seat of our own learning and therefore, it is important that we know what we do well and our next steps.
● Above all, we strive for excellence in all that we do – for both the students and myself – by following the Pinehill Way.

I look forward to getting to know you and your child this year and celebrating your child’s achievements.
