INTRODUCING
Karen Wilson-Perry
Kia ora, Ko Karen tōku ignoa (my name is Karen), Ko Ngāti Raukawa te Iwi (my tribal affiliation is with Ngāti Raukawa from the Horowhenua region).
I am māmā to two amazing young men, David, 30 and Timothy, 28. Both my boys were educated at Pinehill School and they started in the early 2000s. I have had a long relationship with our wonderful school as both a parent and teacher.
I have a few interesting hobbies outside of school, including dance, gardening. I am also an avid reader of different fiction genres. My most recent passion is reconnecting with Te Reo, Tīkanga and Mātauranga Māori.
I am passionate about teaching and learning. I chose teaching as a profession because I wanted to share my many talents and passions, including sport, visual art, dance, drama, creative writing, digital technologies, sociology, and child psychology.
I also have a passion for teaching English as a second language. I enjoy guiding our English language learners in a nurturing way. I encourage and promote a ‘give it a go’ attitude by creating a classroom environment that respects each learner’s need to practise and make mistakes in order to become confident in daily conversation.
I believe in a holistic approach to teaching and learning and I see each child as a precious little vessel filled with awe and wonder. I am very aware that each of my students has their own set of ideas about the world and many of them have already formed some passions and talents in various areas. Plus, they arrive with a sturdy set of family values and morals. My job is to enhance and guide their journey and to help ignite their passion for lifelong learning.
I am looking forward to working alongside you and your child and I value your input in supporting their educational needs and personal development. I’m very keen to establish strong lines of communication between home and school. Therefore, it is important that I am aware of any information about your child that might help me cater to their needs in the best possible way. These may include social relationships, English language anxiety, shyness, or hearing and sight impairments.
