Welcome to Week 3! As we settle into the rhythm of the term we are focussing on Te Māia - Resilience.
Pinehill Way Value focus on Te Maia - Resilience
Each term, we spotlight on one of our Pinehill School values. This term (Term 4), we are shining a light on Te Māia - Resilience, represented by the green cog of our Pinehill Way.
Teachers are exploring what resilience looks like, sounds like and feels like in different settings -for example, in the classroom during learning, in the playground when playing or using sports equipment, or in music when learning an instrument or reading music etc.
Staff are also engaging in discussion about resilience as the Pinehill Way applies to all of us - students, staff, and whānau. We are focusing on resilience as overcoming challenges, persevering and keeping on trying when something is hard, and managing ourselves when things don’t go as planned.

Drill practice
Last Wednesday, the entire school took part in a lockdown drill. We practise evacuation and emergency drills once a term so that, in the event of a real emergency, everyone knows exactly what to do.
This was our first lockdown practice of the year and took place toward the end of the first learning block. The drill evacuation officer was very impressed with how responsibly our students and staff responded.
Afterwards, teachers spoke with students about why we do these drills. For some of our youngest learners (Year 0/1) and those new to Pinehill, this was their first lockdown experience. I was incredibly proud of how calmly and sensibly everyone responded.
In the event of a real lockdown, you will receive a text message in the first instance, followed by regular updates via Hero. If you did not receive Wednesday’s notification about the Lockdown practice, please check with the office that you have successfully connected to our new platform, Hero.

‘NZ Shake Out’
On Thursday, Pinehill School joined many other schools and organisations across New Zealand in the NZ ShakeOut, our national earthquake drill. We played the audio announcement over our loudspeaker system, and classes practised the “Drop, Cover, Hold” actions.
We were very impressed with how responsible and focused our students were throughout the exercise.
Teachers STRIKE tomorrow - School is closed
A reminder that the NZEI Teachers’ Union strike is on tomorrow - Thursday 23rd October.
Pinehill School will be closed tomorrow - Thursday 23rd October. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our teachers.
We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Friday 24th October.
Crossing Roads Safely
We have had emails and phone calls from a concerned neighbour recently regarding Pinehill children running across Hugh Green Drive after school hours, sometimes while looking down at mobile phones or wearing headphones. The neighbour reports some near misses and is worried that children aren’t always looking carefully when crossing the road.
We shared a road safety message at assembly, and teachers are reinforcing these reminders in classrooms. We encourage you to also talk with your children and practise safe road-crossing habits at home. Together, we can help keep all our tamariki safe – it takes a village!

MUFTI DAY - THURSDAY 6th November - KidsCan: A Helping Hand for New Zealand's Children
KidsCan, a local charity founded by Julie Chapman, is making a significant difference in the lives of thousands of New Zealand children. Based in Albany, KidsCan provides essential breakfast, coats, and shoes to 50,000 hungry and underprivileged children across the country.
Despite their incredible work, there are still 2,000 more children waiting for assistance. We can help! By supporting KidsCan, we can ensure that every child in our community has access to the basic necessities they need to thrive.
Let's join forces and make a difference. Together, we can help feed the hungry kids in our community.

Term 4 UNIFORM LAYERS
Dressing for the Term 4 Weather. With the changes in weather patterns, please remind your children to wear their school uniform in layers. As Term 4 warms up, the short-sleeved uniform top should be the first layer students put on, followed by their long-sleeved top or sweatshirt if needed. Singlets, thermals or extra layers are not required during Term 4.
Although mornings can start off cool, temperatures are rising quickly — many days last week reached 21ºC by mid-morning. We’re noticing that some children are feeling quite hot and uncomfortable, particularly when wearing only long-sleeved layers that can’t be removed. When children are too warm and unable to cool down, it can be challenging for them to stay engaged and learn effectively.
We have a range of short-sleeved uniform tops available in our second-hand collection, or alternatively, new ones can be purchased from Janbells. We appreciate your support with this.
Please see the following education quote:
‘The average body temperature for a human is 37ºC and our brains work hard to make sure our bodies maintain this temperature. To do this, our brain makes our body burn glucose to warm up or ventilate and sweat to cool down. So depending on whether its summer or winter, uncomfortable temperatures will cause a distraction to learners.Temperature impacts student’s learning ability and also affects numerous other mental and physical activities. When temperatures are not ideal, the brain gets constant interruptions from the body signaling it to readjust to the temperature, making it hard to focus on the learning task at hand.’
Term 4 - Let’s wear layers, short sleeved uniform top is ideal for Term 4!
