Principals Message

Kia ora tatou, Mālō e lelei, Ann yeong haseyo, Ni hao, Dzień dobry, Buenos días, Bom dia,

2025 has been a remarkable journey at Pinehill School, filled with accomplishments, unity and joy. It was wonderful to celebrate with many parents during Prize Giving ceremonies this week.

Progress Reports will be hand given to all students today to take home and share with you. This is also the day you will find out your child’s class for next year. Students have visited with their new class and teacher this afternoon for the afternoon block. This classroom visit supports our students with getting to know a little about their teacher, who is in their classroom and overall transition before the first day back next year.
There have been many hours put into class organisation for 2026. Even if you think your child should be with a different teacher, please be positive as all our teachers have great skills to offer. There is no option to move children after the lists are set and your reactions influence how your child will view their new class.

School closes at 12:30pm tomorrow. If you require PKC for your child tomorrow afternoon, please contact Rochelle Raddock premium kids care

Meri Kirihimete everyone. I wish you a safe and enjoyable break, and look forward to hearing all about your holiday stories and adventures when school starts back on Thursday 5th February for Meet the teacher conversations which we call ‘Whanau Connect Meetings’ and the full school first day back on Monday 9th February. Merry Christmas!

Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal

Year 6 graduation breakfast

As per Pinehill Tradition, on Monday morning we had a very special Year 6 graduation breakfast in our hall. The students were treated to the most amazing breakfast buffet with so much to choose from, making everyone's mouth water and many go back for seconds and thirds!

The students were presented with their graduation gift and were busy this morning collecting autographs and messages with their special Pinehill pen, one of the memories for them to take away. Following breakfast, the year 6’s headed to the greasy bank behind the Office Modular to help plant a Kowhai tree. The plaque will be positioned by the Kowhai tree engraved with our Year 6’s years spent here. Following the students helping to plant the tree, we have reminded them that as they come back and visit or pass by through the grounds, they can watch the Kowhai tree grow and flourish just like they have grown and flourished here and will continue to do so in their next place. Year 6’s we are very proud of you and what you have achieved. We wish you all the very best with your new journey at Intermediate School.

A special mention and thank you to Wanley from Harcourts who sponsored the ice-cream for our graduates and coffee for our parents and teachers. Thank you to our amazing parent helper group who have worked incredibly hard behind the scenes planning and putting the breakfast together this morning. There's been a menu to plan, food to buy, food to prepare and cook, decorations in the hall to put up, tables to set up, year 6 graduation gifts to organise and put together. A lot of work behind the scenes. Thank you for our amazing team who made this morning happen.

Roots of Empathy

What a heart-warming journey it has been in Room 9 this year with the Roots of Empathy programme. It’s one of those learning experiences that quietly settles into the hearts of our ākonga and helps shape the way they understand themselves, others, and the world around them. The kaupapa of the programme fits beautifully with the Pinehill Way, especially in the way it encourages kindness, compassion, and really “seeing” the people around us.

This year, we were incredibly lucky to welcome our “tiny teacher,” baby Eadie, along with her wonderful parents — Daddy Sam and Mummy Aimie. From their very first visit, they brought honesty, warmth, and a real glimpse into the ups and downs of a baby’s first year of life. Our learners quickly built a connection with them, eagerly observing how baby Eadie communicated, how her moods changed, and how she showed her needs long before she had words.

One of the strongest messages throughout the programme has been that love grows brains. Room 9 learned that the consistent care, cuddles, and calm voices that Eadie receives are shaping her brain and her sense of safety. Watching Sam and Aimie interact with their daughter helped our tamariki understand how nurturing relationships work — and how we can show the same softness and empathy with others.

During the year, we explored big ideas such as emotions, facial expressions, temperaments, and what makes each of us unique. Learners talked openly about what frustration, joy, shyness, or excitement might look or feel like. They made connections to their own lives and to each other, which strengthened the sense of whanaungatanga within our class.
After every session, our ākonga wrote reflective diary entries about what they noticed, learned, or appreciated. These entries became treasured moments of student voice — full of insight, humour, and genuine care.

As we wrap up the year, we extend a huge mihi to Sam, Aimie, and our little teacher Eadie for sharing their world with us. They helped our tamariki see empathy in action — not just as a word, but as something lived every day through kindness, patience, and understanding.
Ngā mihi nui to everyone involved. Room 9 will carry these lessons with them well beyond the classroom.
Today we had our last roots of empathy visit. At 11:30 am Mrs Chatterton sent me and Danial to get baby Eadie. When baby Eadie, Mummy Aimie, and Daddy Sam came into the classroom, everyone looked happy and sad.

She can crawl in a different way and she has way more hair that is a mix of orange and brown. Then Daddy Sam said that Eadie can stand without holding anything. She is also way more independent. Then she even found the crab under the mat. She is way more talkative then last time and she was even talking to Zoey, our roots of empathy doll. Then Mummy Aimie said that Eadie tries to say bird but says bir.

Today, I noticed she was pointing a lot. Surprisingly, Mummy Aimie said that they had just come back from a trip to the south island and baby Eadie had flown on a plane without crying.
At the end of the visit we took another group photo and gave them gifts like letters, a card, a certificate, a nursery rhyme book, and haiku poems. Then Emily and Aiden took them to the office to sign out.

BY LILY!

Baby Eadie came to my school. Sadly, it is the last time we visit with baby Eadie. I am happy to see her teeth growing bigger. The visit was at 11:30 am. Interestingly, Baby Eadie knows we hid the ball under the mat. Baby Eadie was sad lots of the time. I think Baby Eadie is sad because she is teething. Baby Eadie changed her crawl lots of times. Baby Eadie was 65cm now baby Eadie is 72cm.
