As we move through the school term, we are seeing an uptick in common seasonal bugs, colds, and stomach viruses. While regular attendance is vital for learning, keeping the school environment safe and healthy for all of our students and staff requires a collaborative effort.
When children are unwell, resting at home is the fastest way for them to recover and prevents the rapid spread of illness across classrooms.
Quick Guide: Keep your child home if they have:
-
A High Temperature / Fever: Must be fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication before returning.
-
Vomiting or Diarrhea: Must remain at home for 48 hours after the last episode.
-
A Persistent Cough or Severe Sore Throat: Particularly if accompanied by fatigue or body aches.
-
Unexplained Rashes or Contagious Infections: (e.g., conjunctivitis, school sores). Please seek medical advice before returning.
Here is some further guidance the Ministry of Education has shared with schools for our school community.
How to Report an Absence
If your child is going to be away, please inform the school office via Hero, Phone Line / Email info@pinehill.school.nz Please include their name, class, and a brief description of their symptoms.
Thank you for your ongoing support, understanding, and partnership in keeping our school community safe, healthy, and ready to learn!

Reminder: Pick-Up & Drop-Off Zone Etiquette
To keep our students safe and ensure traffic flows smoothly during peak school hours, please remember the guidelines for our designated Pick-Up / Drop-Off Zone:
-
2-Minute Zone Only: This area is strictly for quick drop-offs and pick-ups. Drivers must remain with their vehicles.
-
No Parking or Leaving Vehicles Unattended: If you need to walk your child inside or step away from your car, please use the designated parking areas further down, not the 2-minute drop-off zone.
-
Drive All the Way Forward: Please pull as far forward as possible to allow other vehicles to pull in safely behind you.
-
Enforcement Times: These rules apply from 8:15 AM – 9:00 AM and 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM. Vehicles left unattended or parked over the limit risk being ticketed or towed.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school zone safe and efficient for everyone!

Cellphones and Other Personal Digital Devices e.g. Smart Watches
Recently we have been seeing a rise in students bringing cellphones and/or smart watches to school.
Please refer to our detailed Cellphones and Other Personal Digital Devices Policy available on School Docs.
A summary of the key points:
-
Pinehill School does not recommend that students bring personal digital devices to school.
-
To comply with government regulations, we ensure students do not use cellphones during school hours, including break times.
-
Any devices that do come to school must be turned off and in the student's bag for the day.
Please note the policy for inappropriate use:
-
When we witness students using their phones or smart watch phones during the day, the phone will be held securely at reception for collection at the end of the school day. The phone can be collected before reception closes at 3.30pm or collected the next day.

Netball Cluster
On Tuesday 18th August, we took a Year 5 team and a Year 6 team to the Netball Cluster Tournament. Our Year 6 team finished 4th, while our Year 5 team were crowned champions after an excellent day of competition. The result was a well-deserved reward for the many hours of training and effort the team has put in over the course of the season.
A huge thank you to all the parents who supported our teams in so many ways, including coaching, umpiring and transportation. Your support makes opportunities like this possible for our students, and we really appreciate it.

Room 3 - Narratives
We have been learning about how to write a Narrative for the last few weeks in Room 3.
We have been looking at the features of a Narrative, 4 paragraphs, Orientation, Problem, Solution and Ending. We have also been learning about direct speech, onomatopoeia, and using a simile. At the end of each week, we self assess our writing against the Success Criteria, and then our buddy checks our work and gives us some feedback. We have really enjoyed writing Narratives and making our characters talk about their amazing adventures.

The Mountain with No Name
One cold winter morning, Sabrina, Ceyana, and Clara were in their cosy wood cabin full of thick, dusty books and fluffy, soft pillows. Every morning, they would eat hot pancakes with maple syrup and crispy bacon for breakfast because it was their favourite meal. When Ceyana was in the corner of the colourful library, she saw a faint white shine on the cover of a book called The Mountain with No Name. It was as bright as the moon.
“Look at this!” she exclaimed, waving the book in the air. “What’s the mountain called?” asked Clara. “It hasn’t got a name,” said Sabrina, snatching the book away from Ceyana’s hand as fast as a blur. “Let’s give it a name, then!” shouted Ceyana, excitedly jumping around. So they walked on for miles and miles, trying to look for the mountain, but no matter how hard they tried, they could not find it.
“Huff, puff. Are we there yet?” complained Sabrina, sitting down to take a rest. “What’s that?” asked Clara, hesitating as she pointed to a pink, green, and blue light gleaming in the distance. Suddenly, the bright light came closer and closer, then it sucked them up, like someone sucking a juice box. Whoosh! It teleported them to the top of the mountain, and they called it Mt. Everest.
Days later, it was spring. They made some new friends—Hazel and lots of animals that they helped. “We should do this more often,” suggested Ceyana happily. So they made new discoveries every year, and they lived happily ever after.

The Magical Ship
One sunny afternoon, Pete got a job as a pirate because he wanted treasure to share with his family. When he got in the taxi which came nearby his house, the driver rode Pete to the pirate ship so that he could train as a pirate. Excitedly, Pete got out when they were there, climbed the anchor, and landed with a loud thump onto the deck. Lots of pirates on the ship greeted him, and they liked him very much because they liked having new guests coming onboard the ship.
The next day, they were going to go on the flying ship to spill lots of water from the sea onto the land where it hadn’t rained for ages. Unfortunately, the next day there was no wind, and they couldn’t go onto the land. “This is a disaster!” wailed Captain Cook like he was crying in jail. The pirates looked everywhere for something that could take them back to the island.
“We found it!” yelled a pirate as he pulled out a heavy air conditioner from below deck.
Quickly, the pirate turned the air conditioner on, and they headed to the land as if they were driving on a rescue helicopter. At the end, all the pirates, including Pete, poured water everywhere on the land, and the animals living there had a sip of some water. At last, the pirates flew bak to their ship, had a nice cup of tea, and chatted with each other.
Happily, they had some sardines from the sea, and saw that it was getting late into the night and it was time to sleep. Then, the animals appeared on the beach and thanked the pirates for all of their help. When the animals went away, the pirates headed to their room, got onto their bed, and tried to sleep after their exciting adventure. Finally, the pirates fell asleep, and Pete dreamt about the magical ship and how he saved the animals.
