Principals Message

Kia ora tatou, Mālō e lelei, Annyeong haseyo, Ni hao, Dzień dobry

As we near the middle of the term, great learning continues both inside and outside the classroom. Here’s an update to celebrate recent events and highlight what’s coming up.

🏃‍♂️Pinehill School Cross Country

Congratulations to all our Year 4–6 students who participated in yesterday’s competitive cross-country event. The weather conditions were perfect, and the course provided excellent viewing opportunities for families who came to support.

All classes have been training very hard this term as part of their fitness programme for the Cross Country and the up and coming FUN RUN event and we are very proud of the effort put in by all of the children. Well done everyone. Please see the results below.
Our top eight athletes in the Y4-6 groups, will be continuing to train for the Cluster event to be held on Wednesday 10th June.

🎨 Whole School Fun Run – tomorrow

We invite all parents, families, and whānau to come along and be part of the event. Parent volunteers are still needed to assist at Fun Run stations—if you can help, please email Mr. Duffin at alex@pinehill.school.nz.
Ways to Get Involved:
  • Cheer on the sidelines with encouragement and clapping
  • Join in and run alongside your child
All students will take part in this exciting obstacle course Fun Run, held right here at school. Lunch will be from 12:00pm–1:00pm, and the event will begin at:
  • 1:10pm – Year 5/6
  • 1:40pm – Year 0–2
  • 2:05pm – Year 3/4
Reminder: Students should wear non-precious, white or pale-colored clothing—it will be covered in non-toxic colored powder, mud, and grass stains, creating a lasting memory of the event!

🔒 Lock Down Drill Update

This morning we conducted a school-wide lock down drill to reinforce emergency procedures for staff and students. We practise evacuation and emergency drills once a term so that, in the event of a real emergency, everyone knows exactly what to do.

This was our first lockdown practice of the year and took place toward the end of the first learning block. The drill evacuation officer was very impressed with how responsibly our students and staff responded.

Afterwards, teachers spoke with students about why we do these drills. For some of our youngest learners (Year 0/1) and those new to Pinehill, this was their first lockdown experience. I was incredibly proud of how calmly and sensibly everyone responded.
In the event of a real lockdown, you will receive a text message in the first instance, followed by regular updates via Hero. If you did not receive this morning's notification about the Lockdown practice, please check with the office that you have successfully connected to our new platform, Hero.

💼 Staff Update

Our lovely Deputy Principal, Vicki Nabete, has been appointed as the new Principal of Jireh Christian School. She will officially commence her new role at the beginning of next term.
While it is with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to Vicki here at Pinehill School, we are absolutely delighted for her as she takes this next exciting step in her career. Jireh Christian School is incredibly fortunate to be gaining such an amazing leader.

Farewell Assembly Details

We will be formally bidding farewell to Vicki during the final week of this term. You are warmly invited to join us in celebrating her time with us.
  • Date: Tuesday, 30th June
  • Event: School Assembly
  • Location: School Hall
Please join us in thanking Vicki for her wonderful service to our school community and wishing her the very best for her future.

🛑 Road Safety

We have recently received several phone calls and visits from concerned community members regarding the road safety of some of our students. There have been a few near misses lately, and you may also have heard of two serious local incidents over the last couple of weeks involving a student from Northcross Intermediate and another from Rangitoto College, who were both hit by cars while crossing the road.

Our teachers have been actively discussing safe crossing practices in their classrooms. To reinforce this, Community Constable Tania Wansink will be visiting our school from Tuesday 26th May to Thursday 28th May to run road and crossing safety lessons with all classes.

We ask that you please reinforce these vital safety messages at home:
  • Always use a pedestrian crossing if one is available.
  • Look left, right, and left/right again wherever you are crossing-even if you are using an official pedestrian crossing.
  • Wait for a clear gap in traffic, or ensure cars have safely slowed down and completely stopped, before stepping off the curb.
  • Follow Road patrol Instructions - When crossing with students and parents on road patrol duty, listen to their instructions and only cross when they let you know it is safe to do so.
  • Remove headphones and earbuds when crossing the road so all senses are fully alert to your surroundings.
Please take some time to practice crossing roads safely together as a family. We all want our children to get to and from school safely each day.
Thank you so much for your continued partnership and support with this.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one, but the work of many.

Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal

Pink Shirt Day

Last Friday along with many schools and businesses throughout New Zealand, Pinehill School celebrated Pink Shirt Day. Our school was transformed into a sea of māwhero/pink as we stood together to spread aroha and kindness, celebrate diversity and promote positive social relationships. We raised $400.00 to send in and further support this organisation.

The Core Message: Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying
  • Speak Up: Start conversations about bullying and never be afraid to ask for help. If the first person you ask doesn't help, keep asking—people do care.
  • Stand Together: Bullying makes people feel isolated. Standing together sends a powerful message that there is no place for bullying in New Zealand.
  • Stop Bullying: Pinehill School does not tolerate bullying. We reinforce this daily through our school values (Respect, Integrity, Resilience, Excellence, Responsibility) and ourMITEY programme.
Continue the Conversation at Home: You can find great activities and discussion guides at pinkshirtday.org.nz/schools.
T-Shirt Design Competition Winners:
This year, we had some fantastic entries in our Pink Shirt Day T-shirt design competition. Congratulations to our winners for their creativity and positive messages! We also have many of the designs proudly displayed in the DP’s office, so please come along and have a look at the amazing work from our students.
